Police Dog Tusk was the first official “Blood Dog’ in Queensland/Australia. His specialised training took him to Sydney, NSW, where he was mentored by Sergeant Dean HANSEN, of the State Dog Squad Training & Development Unit. Under rigorous training,Tusk honed his skills and was certified as a Blood Detection Dog. Upon returning to Queensland, he embarked on operational duties that would see him play a critical role in numerous investigations across the state.
Throughout his illustrious career, PD Tusk was instrumental in locating murder weapons and identifying primary and secondary crime scenes. His unique ability to detect and follow microscopic blood trails proved invaluable in the conviction of murderers and serious offenders. Tusk could sense even the smallest traces of blood at a crime scene, often uncovering evidence that had been meticulously cleaned by offenders attempting to evade justice.
Retiring this year at the ripe age of almost 11, Tusk served his final duties with his handler, Senior Constable Phil COWLING, of the Brisbane Dog Squad. As a pioneer in Blood Detection, Tusk leaves behind a legacy that will be hard to fill, not only in the police service but also in the hearts of those he served alongside.
Tusk’s journey is a testament to the vital role of police dogs in law enforcement and the profound impact they have on our communities. As he steps into retirement, Tusk’s contributions will be remembered and cherished, inspiring future generations of police dogs and handlers alike.
Tusk was a much loved member of the Brisbane Dog Squad by all staff and his friendly, quirky, lovable character/personality won hearts around the state. He now resides at home with his handler & family. He spends his days lazing around with his buddies on the farm with a daily walk or swim, which he loves along with lots of love & attention.
